Laura McCann, Rhetoric PhD Candidate Carnegie Mellon University

I am a PhD candidate in rhetoric at Carnegie Mellon University. My dissertation is situated within the rhetoric of health and medicine and technical communication. I study how patients use a technical vocabulary to process identity-challenging medical diagnoses, advocate for their care, and incorporate these medical experiences into their larger narratives.

In addition, I teach and consult with undergraduate, master’s, PhD, and medical school students to improve their communication skills with an emphasis on teaching repeatable skills, rather than merely correcting errors.

Research Interests: the rhetoric of health and medicine; infertility discourse; feminist rhetorics; digital & networked rhetoric; narrative analysis; professional and technical writing.
